Riches of Christ 3

Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Ephesians 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

True children of God are blessed beyond what they could possibly hope for and beyond what they can imagine. While the spiritual senses cannot even apprehend this very well at first, with meditation and prayer the Lord can and will show these things to His children. On the one hand it is comforting to believers to know that their sins are forgiven in accordance with the riches of His grace, this should also teach us more and more about the glory of God and His grace. We are also to know something of what it means to be partakers of the riches of His glory and inheritance, but again a vital part of that is to know that we will know God and be in His presence in eternity.

One of the main points of knowing the truth about spiritual riches is to know that all the gifts God gives are to point back to Himself as the greatest gift. While we are to meditate upon the wonders and glories of His grace, we are to know that He is the greatest grace. Our meditations upon His grace is to move us to meditate upon Him. He is our greatest treasure and He is our greatest riches. We do not have the riches of His grace apart from the riches of His presence. We do not have the riches of forgiveness apart from the riches of His presence. Christ Himself is our greatest treasure and the greatest riches we can have, and we can know this because all spiritual blessings are found in Christ. We can also know this because the fruit of the Spirit (and the Spirit was purchased by Christ for His people on the cross) is love, yet we also know that true love is a love for God from our whole being first and foremost. There is no true love that does not come from God as the origin and source of that love.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (I John 4:7-8)

In this passage from I John we see that believers are to love each other BECAUSE love is from God. John did not command us to love from our own righteousness and our own strength, but he tells believers to love each other because love is from God. This is a profound thought. Only true believers are even capable of true love because in order to love one must be born of God and know God. The Great Command to love God with all of our being, then, teaches us to go to God for that true love as there is no other place we have to obtain that love. While human beings have a form of love (we call it that anyway) it is only moved by self-love rather than the grace of God in sharing His love for Himself with His children.

The riches of the child of God should be clear at this point. A life without love is a life of misery, yet the child of God alone is enabled to share in the love of God for Himself. Notice the profound teaching in verse 8 just above. Those who do not love do not know God. How do we know that? It is because God (as triune) is love. Only those who are born of God and know God have true love and truly love others. This is great riches for all who have eyes to see. This is God sharing Himself with His people and sharing His love for Himself (as triune) with His people. The ability to share in His love and love Him and His people is truly great riches. Doing this for all eternity is riches beyond anything we can think or imagine. The child of God should praise the Father that He has shared His love with them and consider him or herself and rich beyond measure when s/he can see even a small amount of true love come through him or her. Riches, riches, and more riches is the lot of those who have true love.
