Sins Blotted Out by Christ

January 11, 2017

First; Concerning the grace that the Lord is pleased to hold forth to his people here, namely, “The blotting out their transgressions and not remembering their sins.” First, let us consider what it is for the Lord to blot out transgressions; it is an usual phrase in the scripture, and imports much comfort in it. It is an allusion, or an allegorical expression; wherein the Lord is pleased to hold forth his love to man, after the manner of men; to set forth his carriage to men, according to theirs one to another.

It is a phrase borrowed from the practice of men, that keep their debt-books, wherein they cuter, and record the several debts men owe them; that so, for the better helping of their memory, they may find what is due, and know what to demand and call for; I say, the Lord here speaking of “blotting out of transgressions,” hath reference to such debt books, wherein he hath recorded the several debts, or sins, which he enters as men commit them; now the blotting out is nothing else, but that, whereas there were such and such transgressions in the record of God, he draws a blot over them. And that he here hath reference to such kind of dealing, in blotting out transgressions, you may see clearly manifested unto you, in Colossians 2:14, where this phrase of blotting out, is explained: “You being dead in your sins, hath he quickened, together with Christ, having forgiven you all trespasses;” now, mark what follows: “blotting out the handwriting of ordinances which was against us, and was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” what “the hand-writing of ordinances” there is, you may plainly perceive by the words going before, namely, “All our trespasses, and all our sins.” Now the taking away of sin, is called a “blotting it out,” and expressed thus; “The blotting out of the hand-writing that was against us,” because they were, as it were, written down; but the Lord hath razed and blotted them out.

You are not to conceive that there are really such things with God, that he did indeed keep a book, and enter down in it all the several actions of men, and so calling men to account, will open it, and will read out the several firings there written; but the phrase is only an allusion spoken for our better capacity. And, for this cause, you shall find the scripture frequently makes mention of such books God hath. When the seventy disciples came to Christ, rejoicing that the devils were made subject unto them, he replies, “Rejoice not that the devils are made subject unto you, but rejoice, rather, that your names are written in the book of life.” Here is a book, and the names of the disciples written in it; but, if you will mark Revelation 20:12, you will find, there is not only the book of life, but other books besides, out of which the dead, both small and great, were judged, according to their works that they had done; as if he had said, besides the book of life, there is the book of works, wherein the several actions of men are recorded, by which, at the great day, men are to be judged as they are found in them; according to the several debts that are therein, they are to receive their sentence.

Mark, now, for the better apprehension of our weak capacity, the Lord hath taken up such a kind of illustration of his dealing with men; namely, by recording our debts in books; yet, he tells us for our comfort, that, though there be such books, we need not fear; though they shall be opened, yet whatsoever was written in them, in reference to us, is all crossed and blotted out; and, when we come to account, there shall be nothing reckoned unto us, as a fault (Jude 1:24.).                             (Tobias Crisp, Christ Alone Exalted)

Christ: The Life of the Believer

January 10, 2017

Mark what the apostle saith, “Our life is hid with Christ in God.” It is true, there is a natural life, that may be destroyed as well as the life of a wicked man; but yet the soul of a believer is not destroyed; it is cannon proof, all the devils in hell cannot destroy it; “Christ himself is our life; now, when he shall appear, then shall we appear with him in glory.” So that Christ himself must be killed, before our lives shall be destroyed by the enemies. You that are believers have this advantage of your enemies, the unbelievers; you may take away their lives, but they cannot take away yours; they have but one life, a natural life but they that are believers, have a life in Christ; nay he is their life.

Beloved, the Lord intends only your good in all your changes, and that which is best, he provides for you; though your life be taken away from you, where is the hurt or loss? Consider it well, beloved, death is but the opening of the prison doors to let you out; it is but the arrival of a vessel into the haven of rest. What doth the sword do when it enters into a believer? It makes but a change of immortality for mortality, of life for death, of strength for weakness, of glory for shame, of holiness for sin; it doth but pull down a rotten house of clay, to give possession of mansions of glory; it doth but take persons from a cottage at will, to enter into a lordship of inheritance; for it gives full possession of an eternal one. The sword that enters into the breast of a believer, doth but put him into the chamber of the bridegroom, and consummates the marriage of the Lamb to him; it is the fulfilling of the great cry of the saints, “Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly;” and, “I desire to be dissolved, and to be with Christ.” It takes the bride into communion with her long looked-for beloved, and gives her possession of those things she longed for.

Mistake me not, I speak not all this while against holiness and righteousness, that becomes a people to whom Christ is a way; for holy and righteous they shall be; Christ will make them holy, and put his spirit into them, to change their hearts and to work upon their spirits; but this is not the condition required to partake of Christ. Christ himself gives himself, and then he bestows these things when he is given. I say, Christ is given to men first, before they do anything in the world; and all they do, they do by Christ present in them; “I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life that I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God.” We do not so much live, but by the life of Christ, which is life in us. All the actions of life proceed from the soul, now present; how then comes the actions of the soul to be a condition to partake of the soul, that gives life, and, by its presence, works such actions? Christ is the soul of every believer, that animates, and acts the believer in all things whatsoever. Must not this life, Christ, be put into a believer, before he can actuate life, which is a stream springs from that life? How then can this be a condition to receive, to have Christ.

When Christ is first come, by whom these things, that are called conditions, are afterwards wrought, he himself being present to work them? So, say I, God bestows Christ upon men to be a way to bring them to the Father; he is an absolute and free gift. There is no other motive that Christ should be any one’s saviour, than merely the good pleasure of the Father, the bowels of God himself; “Not for thy sake, but for my own sake; not for thy sake, thou art a rebellious and stubborn people, but for my own sake.” Here is the freeness of Christ, to a person coming to him, when he comes merely for God’s sake; and God merely upon his good pleasure will do it, because he will; “He hath mercy upon whom he will have mercy, and whom he will, he hardeneth; it is not in him that willeth, (saith Paul, Romans 9.) nor in him that runneth, but in God that sheweth mercy.” So that Christ becomes a way unto them, not out of their will, not out of their disposition, not out of their holy walkings, but out of that mercy that proceeds out of the mere will of God; his own good pleasure is the only fountain and spring of it. Modern Version of Christianity 5

January 9, 2017

The whole evangelical world is to a large extent unfavorable to healthy Christianity. And I am not thinking of Modernism either. I mean rather the Bible-believing crowd that bears the name of orthodoxy. We may as well face it; the whole level of spirituality is low. We have measured ourselves by ourselves until the incentive to seek higher plateaus in the things of the Spirit is all but gone. Large and influential sections of the world of fundamental Christianity have gone overboard for practices wholly unscriptural, altogether unjustifiable in the light of historic Christian truth and deeply damaging to the inner life of the individual Christian. They have imitated the world, sought popular favor, manufactured delights to substitute for the joy of the Lord and produced a cheap and synthetic power to substitute for the power of the Holy Ghost. (A.W. Tozer)

Matthew 23:23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 24 “You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 “You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!… 32 “Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers. 33 “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?

The world is getting worldlier and the professing Church is as well. There is little difference between the professing Church and the world in many ways. As Tozer saw it, those many years ago, the level of spirituality was low. But again, he was speaking of the orthodox camps and not just those who were in the grips of Modernism. Have things changed since then? Yes, they have, but they have changed for the worse. It is true that things change rather slowly from one day to the next, but in terms of what has happened since the days of Tozer there has been an enormous change. Christianity is moralistic on the one hand and heavily rationalistic on the other. Spirituality, however, is a different story. The things of the Spirit, and that has to do with spiritual insight and spiritual knowledge leading to holiness, is something that is hardly ever mentioned in a positive light.

We are satisfied with an intellectual knowledge of the Bible, an intellectual knowledge of Christ, and an external morality rather than to live by grace alone by the power of the Spirit. The Scriptures teach us very clearly that we are to die to self and our life is to be Christ Himself. We are not to live by our own reason even if it is knowledge of the information of the Bible and of a moral life. The Pharisees had vast amounts of knowledge about the Bible and lived a very moral life if judged by the externals. It does not appear that many people are seeking the face of God in our day. It does not appear that many people are living coram deo, that is, in the presence of God. Instead, professing Christianity has become nothing more (in many ways) than another way of self-help.

Self-help (professing) Christianity is much in vogue. Instead of being centered upon God and seeking His face to know Him and glorify Him by grace alone, man is now the center of his own attention and affections. Man wants to hear of a “gospel” (so-called) that enables him to be fulfilled and to make his life easier and better. God is really nothing more (in man’s conception) than a little help when you need and perhaps a cheerleader in the sky. Instead of man seeking God for higher levels of spiritual growth, man now seeks God to give man higher levels of worldliness. The so-called leaders in the professing Church seem to have bought into this and instead of denouncing it; they seem to be going along with it to some degree.

What used to be thought of as ridiculous is now accepted as orthodoxy. Now men seek self-esteem rather than Christ-esteem. As one Puritan writer put it, “the only self-esteem you have is that which you have stolen from Christ.” The self must be denied in order to truly seek Christ. There can be no seeking of self while one is seeking Christ with the whole heart. One cannot love self in the worldly sense if one is to love God with all of the being. One cannot love the world and God at the same time, but now it seems as if God not only gives people permission to seek and love the world, but it appears that all of the Christian practices are to be done in order to get God to give people worldly things. When the level of spirituality is low, the whole of Christianity is changed from seeking God to seeking the world. Orthodoxy is no longer used for godliness and spiritual growth; it is used for personal fulfillment. We have fallen to great lows in our day. Only God can deliver us from it and yet we will not seek Him for Himself, we only want Him to obtain worldly things and to keep us from hard things which deny us the world we love.

Tozer wrote stirring works in the 1940’s and 50’s and died in 1963. What he wrote about the entire evangelical world being unfavorable to healthy Christianity back then has not gotten any better, but perhaps is far, far worse. This is, of course, a stunning statement in terms of its breadth and width. It takes in denominations and churches and seemingly about everything that is termed “evangelical.” He goes on to say that he was not speaking of anyone but the Bible-believing crowd that bore the name of orthodoxy.

Here is something for people to take to heart and seriously consider. The orthodox crowd in the time of Jesus thought that they were the elect of God, that they had the true set of beliefs, and that they had true holiness. Could it be that evangelical Christianity (in name), while claiming to use the Bible (as the Pharisees did) have in fact used their orthodoxy to twist and turn what the Bible actually teaches? Could it be that some of modern versions of orthodoxy is not really what the Bible teaches? Could it be that we have so trusted in academics to give us history, theology, and the teaching on the Bible that we have been turned from the Scriptures themselves? Have we substituted what people say the Bible teaches for what the Bible teaches?

We know that Jesus said several times that “you have heard that it was said, but I say to you.” Let us rephrase that to this: “The orthodox saying is this, but I say to you.” Do we really look to the Scriptures or do we look to others to tell us what the Scriptures say? Do we prefer to have historians teach us that others have said about the Bible and so we believe that or do we seek the truth from the mouth of God Himself? Just because Martin Luther said it does not make something true. If Luther said something was true and it was true, I should not believe it because Luther said it, but because the Bible teaches it. Just because Calvin said something does not make that something true either. Just because Turretin, or Hodge, or anyone else said something does not make that something true. It is only true if it is truly what Christ by His Spirit taught and teaches in Scripture.

The idea that the history of the Church is the standard of truth continues to sneak in upon us. It is very important to study the history of the Church and the theologians of the past, but it is far more important for people to study Scripture. Calvin, while a brilliant and godly man, does not determine what Scripture teaches. It is also true that we can agree with Calvin about what the Scriptures teach and yet not believe the truth as from Christ. Healthy Christianity feeds upon Christ Himself rather than what the historians teach. Healthy Christianity is also more than what the Bible teaches. Christ Himself is our wisdom and we cannot obtain that kind of wisdom from the Bible. While this may sound heretical to some people, let us know that while the Bible is vitally important, Christ is the real teacher and Christ is our life. The humble soul bows before Christ Himself and reads and studies the Scriptures with Christ as his or her wisdom and Christ as his or her Teacher. The evangelical world still trusts in itself to teach itself the Scriptures.

Modern Version of Christianity 3

January 7, 2017

Many of us Christians have become extremely skillful to arranging our lives so as to admit the truth of Christianity without being embarrassed by its implications. We arrange things so that we can get on well enough without divine aid, while at the same time ostensibly seeking it. We boast in the Lord but watch carefully that we never get caught depending on Him. (A.W.

When we think of what it means to be a Christian, one part of what should be thought of is true holiness as opposed to various forms of false holiness. False forms of holiness will come from hearts that do not want to be different from the world, but in fact will come from those who are skillful to avoid being embarrassed by the implications of being a follower of Christ. The idea of being shamed or ashamed before others can be a mark of the true nature of our hearts. Would we rather be ashamed before God or before men? Will we choose to be shamed before men for true holiness or will we twist and turn our way to avoid being shamed in the slightest?

Matthew 10:32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. 34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 “For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; 36 and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD. 37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
38 “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.

True holiness is to be set apart from all other things and to the purposes of God. We can have an outward form of holiness and yet have no clue about the nature of true holiness. We must confess Christ before men in the sense that we are to confess Christ in life and without our mouths. This does not mean that we are to be overly aggressive and be obnoxious, but we are not to change our paths and ways in order to keep from being shamed. We are to live before God and yet there should be a difference in how we live before men as well. We should speak differently, have different attitudes, and we should have different loves. There is a vast difference between living before God and living before men.

The modern versions of Christianity seem to want professing Christians to become as much like the world as they can in order to reach these people. The biblical version is for Christians to become as much like Christ as they can be grace alone in order that they may glorify God. The difference between these two attitudes or perspectives is huge. The modern version seems to avoid embarrassment before men at all costs and the biblical version is to please God at all costs. We try to figure out our lives in such ways as to avoid being embarrassed at all costs while in fact we are blind to the fact that we should be embarrassed before God. We may boast in the Lord when we are at church, but we would never say anything to those not at church that would indicate our chief love and the One we are supposed to fully depend on. Living before God means living in His presence and seeking His glory and pleasure whether men appreciate that or not.

The words of Tozer seem to be right on point. Rather than wanting a stout and full Christianity where we have Christ and His wisdom at all points, we have watered it down to where we can have a form of it and still be comfortable in our lives and not bother other people. We will talk about certain things at times, but it is clear that we really live by our own wits and our holiness is self-derived though we will argue that it is from the Bible. We want a comfortable level of holiness and “commitment” to the Lord, but we don’t want enough to disturb our own comfort level, the way we spend time, and the way we live around others.

Look at the strong words of Jesus to the Pharisees. They were willing to tithe from their gardens (mint, dill, and cummin), but they were quite unconcerned about justice and mercy and faithfulness which were things that came from the heart and would disturb their religion and their pursuit of money. This points us to an important insight into the modern version of Christianity. Professing believers are willing to spend time on some Sundays, give some money, and keep some level of morality in order to keep the name of Christian. However, that is nothing more than what the Pharisees would do. They were unwilling to seek repentance of their foul and selfish hearts from God in order to be just in their dealings, to be merciful, and to be faithful to God and men. They were willing to do acts of righteousness before men in order to be seen by them (and be proud of themselves in their own eyes), but their hearts were still full of self and the seeking of self.

Pastors will go to great ends to build large edifices for their own honor, though assuredly that is not what they would admit to others. They will go to great lengths to get people to pray prayers and so add to the list of people that they can count as their converts. They will go to great lengths to others to tithe to pay for their large buildings, and perhaps tithe themselves, but that can be done without disturbing their selfish hearts. If these same pastors (in name) would be granted repentance and they began to seek true justice, mercy, and faithfulness, it is most likely the case that they would never get their large buildings built.

Oh how modern Christianity (pastors and others) can present themselves as clean cups and clean dishes, which is to say that the present a clean exterior, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. What is a pastor that wants to build huge buildings for his own name’s sake and urge people to faithfulness to God but a man who is full of self-indulgence while he is robbing the people in the name of God? What are men like that and what is the external version of Christianity that is so full of external cleanness while there is no new heart? These people are like whitewashed tombs as well. The outside is cleaned, washed, and painted white and pretty but all that it is covering is the bones of dead men (or dead hearts). These people are outwardly righteous but the reality of the matter is that they are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness in their hearts. God looks upon the heart and knows all the religious things that are going on regarding the appearance of things while that appearance hides wicked hearts. In this sense the modern version of professing Christianity is just like the version of Judaism that the Pharisees presented.

Modern Version of Christianity 1

Values which Christ has declared to be false are brought back into evangelical favor and promoted as the very life and substance of the Christian way. How eagerly do we seek the approval of this or that man of worldly reputation. How shamefully do we exploit the converted celebrity. A.W. Tozer

When Christ took up human flesh on this planet and was the very tabernacle of God walking around, He was hated. He came and confronted the religious elite of that day and He was not timid or “nice” about how He did it. He called them “hypocrites” and “whitewashed tombs” and many other things that seemed to be intended to provoke them, though indeed in true kindness He may have been trying to open their eyes to their sin. The point is, however, that the one that proclaims truth is not to be swayed concerning the popularity of the issue. Christ pointed out sin many times by poking people in the eye rather than beating around the bush.

In the modern version of Christianity, however, we are too nice to speak against sin and too nice to speak with clarity and authority. The Lord Jesus did not value positive thinking so much as truth and love. The Lord Jesus did not think of being nice (in the modern sense) as a controlling power in His speaking. But also, He did not seek the favor of the political establishment either. He was there to love and glorify His Father by saving His people. When the rich young ruler came to Him, He did not bow to the man’s wealth or position, He spoke truth to the man. As the man turned to walk away, Jesus did not go after the man and water the message down. He did not plead with the man to come back or anything like that. He did not need that man’s money or influence, but instead He spoke the truth to the soul of that man.

The modern version of Christianity appears to be as oriented to celebrities and money as the world is. Instead of understanding and appreciating the Scriptures which teach us that truly the greatest among us is the one that is the most humble, it appears that the louder and more obnoxious a person is the more attention one gets and the bigger the sales of the books and CD’s and the like. It appears that people crave the unusual and the obnoxious rather than the humble. Of course people could say that Jesus was obnoxious, but that would be in a far different way. He did not use vulgar language and He did not speak with racy overtones, He simply spoke the truth. He did not focus on being outrageous, but in speaking the truth He was hated.

The Lord Jesus, who was perfectly humble and was love incarnate, was hated. For some reason we desire to be popular among the religious folks and among the world as well. It seems that we think that if we can be popular that we can gain a hearing and that this will influence people to make decisions and this will give us a greater influence in the world. We think that those with big names will come in and will give us greater influence and will gain more converts. We seek the wisdom of men of the world. But Christ did nothing like that at all. He sought the approval of His Father and no one else. The humble heard Him and they were glad. Broken sinners heard Him and were glad. Perhaps there are great lessons here for people to learn. The famous and the proud will oppose the truth that Jesus taught. Only the humble and the broken will listen. Will we repent of seeking to be celebrities and preach and teach against pride and hold up humility and brokenness and our own inability and weakness? God must turn hearts and make the proud into little children or people will not be converted.

Preaching Christ 3

January 4, 2017

They doat about the letter of the law, but are strangers to the spirituality of it; and, as far as the glorious gospel of the blessed God, they cannot preach it. They may talk about the one God, about the Holy Tirinity, and the trinity in unity; about the divinity of Christ, and the unity of two natures in him; about the ancient settlements of eternity, and preach up what they may call the important doctrines of election and predestination, particular redemption, and effectual vocation, regeneration, justification, and sanctification, efficacious grace, and final perseverance, and yet at the same time be as destitute of the gospel of Christ as Satan himself. Men may speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and be nothing (I Cor 13:1-2). Yea more, be destitute both of the law and of the gospel; and be no more than the letter of the law and the word of the gospel. But the law is spiritual, and that is more than letter; and the gospel of the kingdom stands in power, and power is more than word. (William Huntington, 1745-1813)

In this particular section it is clear that Huntington is saying that a person can have some form of belief in the doctrines of grace and yet be destitute of the Gospel of Christ. Having a belief that what is true is true is not a guarantee that one is converted. This is most likely shocking to some, even many, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ does not tell us that if one believes the things that are true are true that one is converted. This points us to a great error in modern preaching. The speaker assumes that faith is simply a matter of intellectual belief and as such speaks to people in order to inform them and try to get them to believe facts.

As Huntington pointed out earlier, however, a person can be a stranger to the spirituality of the law when that same person goes on and on about the letter of the law. In the same way a person can go on and on about the letter of the Gospel or about the letter of the doctrines of Christ, yet that person can be a stranger to the spirituality of those as well. It is possible for men to be able to speak of justification in the letter of it and the doctrine of it and yet not be justified. This may sound strange to some, but it is possible to believe that the doctrine of justification is taught in the Bible and that it is true and yet not be a true believer, that is, one that has been regenerated by the Spirit and as such be a true believer who is justified. One is not justified by believing that what is true is true, but one is justified by Christ Himself.

Oh how the Scriptures teach us these things and yet we don’t want to admit them. If it is true that men may speak with the tongues of men and of angels and still be nothing, then men may speak of the things of Christ from a pulpit in truth and be nothing. If it is true that mean may have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and be nothing, then it is true that men can have a great understanding and knowledge of the Bible and the doctrines of the Bible and be unconverted themselves and unable to preach the Gospel. The disciples walked with Christ for three years and yet they did not understand Him until He revealed it to them. It is not the academic understanding of Scripture that is a true and spiritual understanding of Scripture and thus men are able to preach from the heart, but it is only the spiritual knowledge that Christ gives that enables men to preach from the heart and to the souls of men.

Since the heart of the law is spiritual, and we might add that in the New Covenant it is internal, the heart of Christ is also internal and He is the life of the soul in the New Covenant. As the law cannot be truly preached apart from love and apart from spiritual things, so Christ cannot be preached apart from love and spiritual knowledge of Him. We are told that we are to worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24), so surely Christ is to be preached in that manner as well. It is not enough to preach the truth, Christ must be preached in and to the inward part of man as well. The Gospel of Christ is the Gospel of the kingdom of God and that is the reign and rule of God. The reign and rule of God is with power and it is far more than just the power of words, so the Gospel of the kingdom of God is also with power and not just words that are true. The Gospel is not just good news about facts, it is good news about what God does in sinners and how Christ saves sinners. It is about what God actually has done and continues to do, it is not just about historical facts. True preaching recognizes that and preaches the living Christ.

The quote from above shows many things concerning true preaching if we care to look at it. While many think of the law in terms of letter and spirit, it is also true that preaching can be in accordance with words and spirit. Preaching can also be in terms of the letter of Christ and of the spiritual nature and work of Christ. Until a preacher is preaching in a spiritual manner, that is, by analogy as in letter of the law versus the spiritual nature of the law, that preacher is not preaching the gospel of the glory of Christ.

It is a far different thing to speak and preach on the 6th commandment if one thinks of murder as limited to the actual killing of another human being in a non-lawful manner rather than hatred in the heart and using vicious words toward them. In that sense it is a far different thing to speak of the two natures of Christ in a wooden way and only speak of them in the doctrinal sense than it is to speak of them in a spiritual way. It is one thing to speak of the doctrines of grace according to the words and a physical sense, yet it is a far different thing to speak of grace in a spiritual sense (according to the spirit). The Scriptures speak of a spiritual knowledge, which is to say that there is a knowledge that goes far beyond the dictionary definition of a word.

The hope is that in using the letter of the law and the spirit of the law (or spiritual nature of the law) as an example that it will set forth what it means to preach Christ. As a person cannot truly preach about any commandment from the letter of the law approach, so no one can truly preach Christ from the letter of the text approach. It is not enough to give a definition and tell what the word means and then how that applies to Christ, one must go into the truth of the spiritual nature of Christ and the spiritual meanings of the work of Christ. The preaching of most modern preachers is of no more benefit to the people than reading a commentary. The goal appears to be to give the people information and when that is accomplished they think they have preached. No, they have only given a lecture that any unbeliever could give if the unbeliever had the inclination to do so. Unbelievers can give solid lectures about the Bible as long as they do not have to say anything spiritual.

While there may be some stronger words said here, it is not meant to mock or demean. If anyone reads these words and God uses them to be awakened that there is more than just words and morality to a sermon and to Bible study, then the real intent will be understood. It is easy for an unbeliever to produce a lecture on regeneration as taught in the Bible. What the unbeliever cannot do is preach on regeneration from an understanding that being regenerated gives. What the unbeliever cannot do is preach on regeneration from the experience of regeneration. When preachers attempt to preach Christ in a way that an unbeliever could do, they are not truly preaching from the heart and they are not truly preaching Christ.

It is a sad thing in our day when there is orthodoxy but Christ is not preached. It is a sign that God has turned us over to hard hearts and has sent a spiritual famine in the midst of a lot of information about the Bible. We have Bibles and commentaries and so much in our day, yet in the midst of plenty we are in a severe famine. Men are preaching and teaching the texts of Scripture and they never get beyond a physical or external meaning. The people will not and cannot be spiritually fed unless there is spiritual teaching. Unless Christ is being spiritually preached then He is not truly being preached at all, He is only being spoken about in a way that any unbeliever could speak about if s/he wanted to. In fact, it is most likely the case that there are vast numbers of preachers who are unconverted because they are not preaching Christ at all. This is not a small issue, but it is vital.

If Luther was correct that the church stands or falls on whether it preaches the Gospel or not (justification), then we must see that when Christ is not preached in truth (in a spiritual manner), the Gospel is not being preached. The Gospel of God is when God shines forth His glory in the face of Christ and that is not a physical light, that is a spiritual light. The Gospel is not just information about some physical truths of Christ, but instead it is the truth of Christ and the glory of Christ and that must be spiritual because of the divine nature of Christ. But again, if the church (spiritual and invisible Church as well as any local church) stands of falls on the doctrine of justification, then the Gospel must be preached in the spiritual sense for a church to be a church and for one who takes the name of “preacher” or “minister” to be a true preacher who ministers the true Gospel.

Preaching Christ 1

I Cor 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. 18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.” 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men… 30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD”.

The doctrines of the Reformation flowed from Scripture, but they were also illuminated by the non-biblical way that Rome had taken things and applied certain teachings. Rome focused on baptism and the mass instead of Christ. Rome thought it had grace given to it (the Church) and it could dispense grace as it pleased. Rome had Christ bound (so to speak) in its traditions and in its sacramental system. It basically repeated some of the great errors of the Pharisees. Whenever man tries to step in and take control of the truth and then interpret it according to his own fallen reason, the supernatural aspects of it are taken away and man is now in control (he thinks) of his own salvation.

Paul lived in a day where men were wise in their own eyes and others looked for miracles and power. That is really nothing new and so he took the Pharisees and the Judaizers on. Paul was called out and chosen by God to preach Christ, the cross, and a free-grace in the face of legalism and man-centered approaches. Luther, though in a different way, was called out by God to stand up to Rome and preach Christ, the cross, and free-grace in the face of legalism and Arminianism. In our own day the same theories of men are running free again and are finding little resistance. It seems as if many in our day have fallen into the notion that they must not stand against Arminianism and as such they are not going to stand against legalism in all of its forms either.

Paul was sent to preach the Gospel and He was sent to preach Christ and Christ crucified. Luther preached Christ, though indeed he is known for justification by grace alone through faith alone, but that was his way of preaching Christ. In the modern day it is rare to find someone who truly preaches Christ. Some will preach doctrines about Christ, but that is not preaching Christ. Some will speak of Christ or speak of the cross here and there, but that is not preaching Christ. It is not preaching Christ when one gives a learned discourse or a learned lecture on a subject. It is not preaching Christ to tell people how to keep the law or how to be moral. It is not preaching Christ to fill people with stories of Jesus and His miracles and healings. Some try to preach Christ as if they were giving an academic lecture. Christ is not preached in those ways.

Paul was sent to preach the Gospel (the Gospel of Christ, the Gospel of the glory of God, the Gospel of God) and he was not sent to baptize. Paul was sent to preach the Gospel, though not in cleverness of speech. He gives us the reason why he was not sent to preach with cleverness of speech. If he did so, the cross of Christ would be made void. In this context, it appears to be impossible to preach the Gospel if one does so with clever speech. The Gospel is opposed to baptism and the Gospel is opposed to preaching the Gospel with clever speech. The Gospel of a crucified Savior must be preached plainly and clearly. This is another way of saying that it takes a crucified man to preach a crucified Christ.

Here is one conclusion that we can draw. Uncrucified men cannot preach the Gospel of a humble Christ. Uncrucified men cannot preach the Gospel of the broken Christ. Uncrucified men cannot preach the Gospel of the glory of God when in fact they are seeking their own glory. The Gospel is all about Christ and how Christ saves sinners to the glory of God. When men preach in a way or with the intent (regardless of how hidden it is to themselves or others) where the glory comes to men or the glory of Christ is hidden to some degree, those men are not preaching Christ but are preaching things about Christ in order to declare themselves. It does not matter how well men can speak and how well they know their doctrine, until they die to themselves they will not preach Christ. A man who has not died to self will only preach Christ for the sake of self. Regardless of how well his speaking gifts are and how well he knows orthodox doctrine, apart from death to self he will only preach for self.
