Riches of Christ 4

May 19, 2016

Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Ephesians 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

In pondering over these verses it is possible to see something of the riches of having Christ Jesus. However, we must be careful and know that there is a distinction between seeing in some way that these things are factually true and then the ability to taste and know that these are true. There is the intellectual knowledge that something is true, but that is not the same thing as seeing the true beauty of Christ in these and being caught up in His beauty with them. There is also a selfish and self-centered way of thinking that I have riches in Christ, yet we must be caught up with Christ Himself to taste and see that these riches are real riches.

It is one thing to know that there is a doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone. Any person, believer or unbeliever, can see the propositions set out in the doctrine and in one sense know that doctrine. There is another sense in which a person can acknowledge and know that the doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone is true as stated. However, that is still not the same thing as being justified by grace alone. In other words, or to put the matter plainly, it is not enough to know that there are riches untold in Christ just as it does my bank account no good to know that another person has millions or billions in his or her account. The intellectual knowledge of riches is not riches to me. The knowledge that there are riches in Christ does me or anyone else any good until Christ is the life of the soul.

The riches of His grace are not of saving benefit to those who do not have Christ. The riches of that grace for those who are redeemed and forgiven by Christ are not for those who are not redeemed and forgiven by Christ. It is Christ Himself who has the riches and is the riches. Sinners must be put in Christ and Christ must be in them in order for them to have Christ and His riches. This is to say once again, the riches of Christ have no saving or sanctifying benefit to sinners who do not have Christ. It will do them no good in eternity to know all about the riches of Christ and His grace when they are under the eternal wrath of God and are outside of Christ.

In order to make the point even plainer, the devil himself knows more theology than any saint on earth in terms of the intellectual part of it. The devil has no benefit to knowing about the riches of Christ since he can never partake of those riches of Christ. In John 8:44 Jesus, speaking of the Pharisees and others with them, told them that “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.” These were the religious elite of the day, the theologians of the day, and those who thought of themselves as holy. They knew a lot about the Bible and yet they missed the fact that the central message of the Bible is Christ. These men, while they were so esteemed as religious and holy, were at enmity with Christ.

“The riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints” is only found in the saints. The surpassing riches of His grace in Christ is only found in Christ. It is so deceptively easy for men and women to go about their daily lives living in an outwardly moral sense and perhaps in a very religious sense and that without knowing Christ. It is so easy for men and women to be caught up with the thought of having the riches of Christ and be total strangers to Christ. Yes, thinking upon the riches of Christ is wonderful, but having Christ in reality is something each person should seek the Lord for. We don’t have the riches of Christ because we are good people or religious people, we will only have the riches of Christ if God gives them to us by His grace alone. That grace is of greater worth than millions of worlds. Let us seek those riches asking God to glorify His grace in and through us.

Riches of Christ 3

True children of God are blessed beyond what they could possibly hope for and beyond what they can imagine. While the spiritual senses cannot even apprehend this very well at first, with meditation and prayer the Lord can and will show these things to His children. On the one hand it is comforting to believers to know that their sins are forgiven in accordance with the riches of His grace, this should also teach us more and more about the glory of God and His grace. We are also to know something of what it means to be partakers of the riches of His glory and inheritance, but again a vital part of that is to know that we will know God and be in His presence in eternity.

One of the main points of knowing the truth about spiritual riches is to know that all the gifts God gives are to point back to Himself as the greatest gift. While we are to meditate upon the wonders and glories of His grace, we are to know that He is the greatest grace. Our meditations upon His grace is to move us to meditate upon Him. He is our greatest treasure and He is our greatest riches. We do not have the riches of His grace apart from the riches of His presence. We do not have the riches of forgiveness apart from the riches of His presence. Christ Himself is our greatest treasure and the greatest riches we can have, and we can know this because all spiritual blessings are found in Christ. We can also know this because the fruit of the Spirit (and the Spirit was purchased by Christ for His people on the cross) is love, yet we also know that true love is a love for God from our whole being first and foremost. There is no true love that does not come from God as the origin and source of that love.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (I John 4:7-8)

In this passage from I John we see that believers are to love each other BECAUSE love is from God. John did not command us to love from our own righteousness and our own strength, but he tells believers to love each other because love is from God. This is a profound thought. Only true believers are even capable of true love because in order to love one must be born of God and know God. The Great Command to love God with all of our being, then, teaches us to go to God for that true love as there is no other place we have to obtain that love. While human beings have a form of love (we call it that anyway) it is only moved by self-love rather than the grace of God in sharing His love for Himself with His children.

The riches of the child of God should be clear at this point. A life without love is a life of misery, yet the child of God alone is enabled to share in the love of God for Himself. Notice the profound teaching in verse 8 just above. Those who do not love do not know God. How do we know that? It is because God (as triune) is love. Only those who are born of God and know God have true love and truly love others. This is great riches for all who have eyes to see. This is God sharing Himself with His people and sharing His love for Himself (as triune) with His people. The ability to share in His love and love Him and His people is truly great riches. Doing this for all eternity is riches beyond anything we can think or imagine. The child of God should praise the Father that He has shared His love with them and consider him or herself and rich beyond measure when s/he can see even a small amount of true love come through him or her. Riches, riches, and more riches is the lot of those who have true love.

Riches of Christ 2

The Lord Jesus told us that the poor in spirit are blessed. We are told that it is the humble and the contrite who are blessed. Let us consider what it means, however, for the poorest of people (poor in spirit) are the richest of people. Since God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble, those who are humble have the infinite riches of His grace. While we may have little or nothing on this earth, we are told that we can have treasure in heaven and that it can be stored up for us. While this could make our hearts proud, if we think of this only coming to us by grace, it should humble us more and more as we think and meditate on this. God, in His great mercy and grace, has bestowed riches upon His children in this life (spiritual riches) and then allows them to treasure more riches in heaven for all eternity.

Paul prayed for the people in Ephesus that they would know the hope of His calling and “what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” This passage has been disputed to some degree on the exact meaning, but what we can know is that this speaks wonderful things to the people of God. Whether it is the glory of His inheritance in obtaining the saints or whether it is the inheritance He gives to the saints, what it boils down to is that the glory of God is involved in the inheritance that the saints will obtain.

God has a provision of grace in Christ that we are to pursue here and seek His face for here and now, but in eternity there are riches of glory in His inheritance. We must not think of this glory in a selfish way, for these riches in glory are really all about God and His glory. God gives freely His grace to sinners and He has freely given Christ to satisfy His wrath and to give them a perfect righteousness, but we must never lose sight of the real issue is God and His glory. The salvation of sinners is never the chief and primary object in the mind of God, but rather His own glory is His chief and primary object. When God forgives sinners in and through Christ, what He is really doing is giving them Himself and that is what they should want more than anything. This is a vital point that modern Evangelicalism has left far behind.

When God forgives sinners according to the riches of His grace, sinners should behold the wonders of His grace and yet behold the wonders of God Himself. When God gives sinners grace, He is not giving them something apart from Himself, but He is giving them Himself. He gives them His beloved Son who becomes their life, yet the Son is always in perfect communion with the Father. When the Father communicates His love to the Son, the saints are sharing in the love the Father has for the Son. When the Son communicates His love to the Father, the saints are sharing in the love the Son has for the Father. In this way we see that by free-grace believers are loved beyond anything they can imagine and this is untold riches of grace.

True believers, which is to be united to Christ by the work of God, is to share in the very life of God. Christianity is not exclusively defined by certain doctrines, though doctrine is vitally important, but Christianity is defined by sharing in the life of God. What believers receive is eternal life and that is to share in the life of God. While it is true that eternal life never ends, it is also true that eternal life has a quality to it and not just a quantity. Jesus Christ Himself is our eternal life (I John 1:1-6; 5:18-20). Having this eternal life is riches beyond comprehension. Having Christ as our life and dwelling in us by His Spirit is infinitely more riches than owning the whole world and a million more worlds.

Riches of Christ 1

May 16, 2016

The world is spent in pursuit of riches, pleasure, and happiness. For the true believer, however, they have riches untold in Christ and it comes to them in grace and by grace. The believer has Christ as his or her riches and in Christ alone there is grace and that grace is called (In Ephesians 1:7 above) “the riches of His grace.” While the world goes about collecting riches for this world and those who obtain worldly riches soon die, the true believer that has Christ has spiritual riches that cannot be counted. The riches are spiritual and as such the eye cannot behold them, but the eye of faith knows something of these riches. Only spiritual people can understand spiritual wealth and spiritual riches, which means the world does not see them.

Now it is true that the fleshly mind can consider going to heaven rather than hell a great thing and so think it has a handle on spiritual riches. The fleshly mind can think that it has received grace (though does not truly understand it) and think it has riches of grace, for after all not going to hell is something to be thought highly of. The fleshly mind, however, opposes sovereign grace which is the only kind of grace that there is. The fleshly mind opposes free-grace (when rightly understood) and with enmity in the heart toward the true God will praise its own god for giving him or her grace to escape hell. The fleshly mind has no real concept of sin, though it will admit to some doing things that are somewhat wrong, which tells us that the fleshly mind has no true concept of forgiveness.

The true believer, however, beholds the riches of grace in Christ. The true believer has had the Spirit convince him or her of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. The true believer has felt the awful weight upon his conscience and knows what it is like to know that s/he is worthy of eternal judgment. The true believer has seen something of the thrice holy God and knows that all of his or her sin is against God. The true believer understands that there is no forgiveness but through the blood of Jesus Christ. “Oh how precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow.” The true believer sees and knows that there was and is nothing in him or her that could possibly move God to save him or her. The true believer knows that there is nothing in him or her that is worth saving for his or her own sake. The true believer sees his or her own heart as filthy and knows that s/he has nothing that comes from his own heart that is worth saving, but all good that comes from that heart is by grace.

The glory of grace toward the believer is that it began in eternity past and that God planned to show grace to such an awful sinner before the sinner had being to sin. The glory of this grace is that the forgiveness of sin is in accordance with the riches of grace. If a sinner thinks that forgiveness is in accordance with him or herself or anything to do with his or her own goodness or merit, then the only forgiveness that the sinner can claim is based on his or her own goodness or merit. But the true believer looks to grace alone for forgiveness and knows that his or her forgiveness is in accordance with the riches of His grace. This is to say that the believer can look into the infinite glory of God and know that his or her sins are swallowed up in grace. The true believer can behold the glory of God and the riches of His grace and know that his or her sins are forgiven and that in and by the blood of Christ there is no eternal reckoning required.

The person that has no sin on his or her account before God is truly rich and has the riches of grace which is beyond all that we can think or imagine. There is nothing more precious than having our sins washed away by the blood of Christ and to be escorted into the throne room of the living God on the basis of the Perfect Christ and His Work. What can be more precious than the riches of grace that saves sinners from the wrath of God and gives sinners the presence of God? What can be more precious and be considered as true riches other than Christ and His work on behalf of sinners which He did out of love for the Father? Sinner, behold the riches of grace and live for His glory. Sinner, behold the riches of grace in Christ and pursue holiness based on grace. Sinner, don’t look to your own merit or goodness, but look to Christ. It is yours as a free-gift of free-grace. It is riches untold and may our hearts find rest and peace in that!

Power of Pride 12

May 14, 2016

Pride is a sin by which the whole law of God, in each of its ten commandments, is broken. (Anne Dutton, Letters on Spiritual Subjects)

Habakkuk 2:4 Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him; But the righteous will live by his faith.

Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

James 4:6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

It is not often that we hear of pride as being something other than a person thinking too highly of him or herself, but what we see from the Scriptures and the comments by Dutton pride is at the very essence of sin. As the Ten Commandments reflect something of the holiness of God, so pride reflects how man is unlike God, lives to his own glory, and in all that falls short of the glory of God. A proud heart is a heart that is puffed up with self and lives for self rather than being full of the glory of God and living for Him. A proud heart exalts self rather than God, which is to show the very heart of sin. Pride puts itself in the place of God in terms of the place to look for wisdom, for justification, and for the goal of living.

The commandments are unified in the sense that they all flow from the character of God. The Ten Commandments were formally stated to the nation of Israel, but all of these commands are seen in the book of Genesis. This should teach us that the very heart and truth of the commandments are not found in the civil and ceremonial requirements given to the nation of Israel, but instead these reflect how God is toward Himself and how we are to love God. We are commanded to be holy as He is holy, so we can know that real holiness is to be like God. The commandments, minus the civil and the ceremonial laws, teach us how God is in Himself and they reflect His holiness. God does nothing that is not for His own glory, which is also to say that He loves Himself as triune in all He does. Is there a greater to love than Christ for the Father? Is there a greater for Christ to love than the Father? For them to be holy, then, they must love each other perfectly. Is the Greatest Commandment nothing more than an arbitrary command of God or is it how God exists in and of Himself as triune? The triune God who is “a God of love” is indeed a God who lives in perfect love within the Trinity.

The proud person is quite the opposite of God in that the proud person loves himself and does all for himself rather than love God in all he does. While the First Commandment teaches us to have no other gods before God, what it teaches us is that we are to have no gods in His presence (before Him = in His presence). The proud person violates that commandment because the proud person is his own god and does all for himself out of love for himself. The proud person listens to his own wisdom and follows his own heart as the very foundation for all of his or her morality. The proud person follows his own heart and as such does not follow Christ who kept all the commandments perfectly out of a perfect love. Christ could keep the commandments perfectly because He was the very tabernacle of God and He loved God perfectly and spoke and acted as He received from the Father.

Oh how the proud heart finds being like Christ so hard and so restricting, yet the lover of God finds that s/he wants to be more and more like God. A proud heart is at enmity with God and does not want Christ to rule over it and does not want to be like the true Christ. The proud heart wants to live by its own power and independence rather than rest in Christ and receive all from His self-sufficiency. The proud heart loves self, lives for self, does all for self, and violates all that God is. The proud heart wants to be religious to the degree it wants to be religious rather than love God with all of its being. The proud heart wants to be holy as it wants to be holy rather than be holy as He is holy. The proud heart wants to be like self rather than to be like Christ. The proud heart wants to love self rather than love God. The proud heart wants to have self-esteem rather than Christ-esteem. The proud heart, then, is clearly its own god. A proud heart is taking the throne of God and sitting in the seat thinking that self is the god to follow. What an enormous power pride has when hearts are deceived and blinded to the fact that the proud heart is a god to self and as such does not bow in submission to the living and true God. A proud heart is the opposite of a humble heart that has true grace.

Gospel Preaching 40

May 13, 2016

I Corinthians 2:2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

He should also open his mouth vigorously and confidently, to preach the truth that has been entrusted to him. He should not be silent or mumble but should testify without being frightened or bashful. He should speak out candidly without regarding or sparing anyone, let it strike whomever and whatever it will. It is a great hindrance to a preacher if he looks around and worries about what people like or do not like to hear, or what might make him unpopular or bring harm or danger upon him. (Martin Luther)

“Preach Christ, let your end be to glorify him, to render him amiable and precious in the eyes of his people; to lead them to him as a sanctuary to protect, a propitiation to reconcile, a treasure to enrich, a physician to heal, an advocate to present, as righteousness to justify, as sanctification to renew, as redemption to save, as an inexhausted fountain of pardon, grace, comfort, victory, and glory.” (Edward Reynolds)

When Christ is not the center of sermons, sinners do not feed upon Him and the faith which Christ gives to His beloved is not strengthened. Children of God are under attack by the evil one and they need to hear of the free-grace of God in Christ. When these weak ones feel the weight of their sin, they should hear the glories and riches of Christ who is their righteousness even though they have none of their own. These poor sinners need to hear of God’s free-grace is sending Christ to take away His wrath from them that they may be reconciled. These poor sinners that fill the pews are weak and helpless in themselves if they see themselves as they really are. These poor sinners feel their bondage to sin in some way and they need to know that a Redeemer has purchased them and is sovereign over them even now. These poor sinners who are harassed by the evil one and accused need to hear that they have an advocate with the Father. These poor sinners need to know that they cannot exhaust the foundation of God’s pardon and grace. These poor sinners need to know that Christ comforts the worst of sinners and in Him there is victory and in Him they may glory.

The children of God grow in their sense of their sinfulness and as such they need to hear of Christ and the Gospel of His free-grace on a constant basis. As God gives these children more and more light, more and more of their own dark hearts can be seen. These children of God begin to wonder if they are in reality children of the devil because of their horrible sin, so they need to hear of the fountain of pardon and grace that cannot be emptied or exhausted. Can a child of God actually have sin that is greater than His infinite grace and love? Can a child of God actually empty the infinite supplies of pardon that are found in Christ? Is the fountain of grace that was purchased by the blood of Christ actually be emptied? Of course that is not the case, but sinners who are feeling the fiery darts and the accusations of the evil one need to hear that declared.

Christ is also the Comforter of His children, so this needs to be expounded and feelingly declared from the pulpit. It is a preached Christ and a felt Christ that comforts, not just the intellectual part declared. Sinners must hear more than the doctrine, they must hear preaching that brings sinners to the living Christ and receive comfort from Him. It is not enough for surgeons to tell patients that they need surgery, they must actually do the surgery and then provide the care (through nurses and medication) needed for the patient to get better. Christ comes to His children and comforts them by free-grace and not because they have merited this. Sinners who are being attacked need to hear of Christ and be comforted by Him.

Poor, weak, and distraught sinners who are under attack need to hear of the victorious Christ. Indeed sinners may think that they are losing battle after battle, but the war has already been won by Christ. This is not just positive thinking, but it is reality. Jesus the Christ has crushed the head of the serpent and the war has been won. It is now a matter of looking to Christ and fighting to the end by His strength. We must know that sinners are saved and sanctified by Christ and His free-grace, and Christ never does anything that is not for the glory of His Father. It is not that sinners glorify God by their works as such, but they glorify God as Christ works in them and as Christ upholds them. Sinners are instruments of His glory and not those who add to His glory. Christ must be preached to the children of the devil that they may become children of God. Christ must be preached to the children of God that they may not be deceived into thinking that they are children of the devil. Christ and His free-grace must be preached and that weekly at the very least.

Gospel Preaching 39

May 12, 2016

I Corinthians 2:2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified 3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

Clearly, from Paul, Luther, and Reynolds the Gospel is for believers and is not just some canned message that a person gives another to see if they will make a decision in order to be saved. Preaching Christ (Person and works) is the standard of what preaching is and apart from preaching Christ true preaching descends rapidly from there. What can one preach (truly) if not preaching Christ? Can there be holiness apart from the life of Christ in the believer? Can there be love apart from the life of Christ in the believer? What is the true Church apart from Christ? What is the Gospel apart from the glory of God shining forth in and through Christ and His works? The goal of preaching is of course the glory of God in Christ, which teaches us that apart from Christ the elements of preaching fall far short depending on how much or how little Christ there is in the preaching.

All things have been created through Christ and He is the reason that they have been created. How can there be biblical preaching, then, apart from the foundation of where things came from and the reason that they have a being and the goal of that being? When one thinks of how the fall of man into sin can only be seen by how man was created and the purpose man was created, we see the purpose of preaching creation and the fall. That is the dark background on which the glorious light of Christ in redeeming sinners is set forth. The Lord Jesus Christ alone redeems sinners and pays the price for them. Man should constantly look to his Redeemer who purchased him with His blood and draw upon the constant and consistent grace man needs for true obedience. Since men need to constantly look to their Redeemer and the free-grace that is in Him, they should hear preaching on Christ and His redemption on a regular and consistent basis.

It is an absolute truth that all men sin and that at all times. While this sounds quite negative, there is nothing a man does in this life that is perfect and without sin. Men are sinners by nature and as such all that they do is tainted by them to some degree. Scripture tells us that even our works of righteousness are as filthy rags. In other words, those with spiritual sight know that they fall short in all that they do and as such they must constantly look to the inexhaustible fountain of pardon that comes to the children of God by free-grace. There is no Gospel of free-grace apart from Christ. There is no Gospel but that of free-grace. Sinners, however, fall into all forms of legalism and conditionalism on a regular basis. It is so easy to fall into trusting something about self or about what we do. Preachers must preach Christ and His free-grace to the people or they will fall into their forms of legalism and conditionalism and remain there to some degree. The Gospel demands that faithful ministers preach free-grace to sinners often and to do that they must preach Christ often.

There is no end to the free and gracious pardon of God in Christ Jesus for His children. There is no benefit to hammer the children of God with the law over and over without setting this grace before them. True believers come to Christ by free-grace as well. True believers have no fountain of forgiveness apart from free-grace. There is no preaching which comforts and builds up the children of God other than preaching Christ and His free-grace. It is true enough that sin must be preached on and the refuges of men must have light shown on them and they must be driven into the open, but that is not to be done in order to beat the sheep. Men must be driven out of their refuges and hidden places that the glory of Hs free-grace may shine upon and in them. Apart from preaching the fullness of Christ, the children of God will wander in desolate places and not be fed. The sheep must be fed and it is Christ Himself who is the food of His people.

The preacher should be vigorous and confident in preaching the Gospel of free-grace. Why should one be silent or mumble around concerning such a glorious manifestation of the Gospel of Christ? The preacher must preach Christ for the glory of God, the good of the people of God, and for the conversion of all that God will draw to Himself. It is Christ who must be proclaimed if people are going to hear of a King who protects them and cares for them. It is Christ who must be proclaimed if people are to hear of a perfect propitiatory sacrifice that cleanses them from all of their sins. It is Christ who must be proclaimed if people are to have a true treasure.

The world is not often thought of in terms of it being a treasure, but that is the treasure people seek for day in and day out. People seek many kinds of treasure in the world, regardless of what they call it, but apart from seeing Christ as the true treasure people will seek treasure in the world. It is Christ who is the greatest treasure that can be found. It is in Christ where all spiritual riches and treasures are found. It is in Christ where all the treasures of wisdom, knowledge, and grace are found. It is in Christ alone where all spiritual riches can be found. It is in Christ and Christ alone where the treasures of heaven are put on display for those with eyes to see. Christ is precious to all those that believe, and Christ is far more precious than gold to those who believe. It is Christ who is the desire of those who love Him. It seems that there is no excuse for not preaching Christ, which is far more than mentioning Him in the sermon.

Wounded sinners need a physician to diagnose them, to prescribe what is needed, and then someone to apply the medication. Jesus Christ Himself is the Great Physician of the soul and He alone can heal the soul that is truly wounded. Only Christ can see into the depths of the heart and know what is truly going on there. Only Christ can possibly know the perfect way to heal a wounded heart. Only Christ can know the degree and extent of the disease and so know how to deal with sinners of various cases. Christ alone is sufficient for any spiritual work since apart from Him we can do nothing (spiritual).

When poor sinners are distraught and tried by their wicked hearts within them, they need a sufficient Advocate pleading a sufficient sacrifice. There is no one else acceptable to the Father to present a perfect sacrifice in the place of sinners and plead the merits of His own blood, righteousness, and grace. Only Christ can stand in for sinners as a substitute and have that acceptable to the Father. Only Christ can plead for sinners based on His own Person, works, and perfect righteousness. Sinners need to look to Christ alone for grace alone. There is nothing meritorious or good in sinners themselves, but there is One who is sufficient in all He is, all He has, and all He is doing.

Sinners should seek the Lord for His grace to give them humbled and broken hearts. They should seek the Lord for His work in giving them a broken heart. No one else is sufficient for this work, though men should seek it from the Lord Himself. Men don’t need winsome preachers and encouraging (in the modern sense) words, they need to hear Christ preached and they need to cry out to the Lord to give them ears to hear. Not only all of that, but they need Christ Himself to cast out evil the one and His bondage from their hearts. They need to be delivered from the kingdom of darkness and be transferred into the kingdom of His Beloved Son. There are not enough sermons to preach the complete Christ and the full Christ, but He should be preached faithfully.

Paul wanted to know nothing among the Corinthians by Christ and Him crucified. Luther said preach the truth regardless of what might make the preacher unpopular. Edward Reynolds is so clear that the people of Christ need to the Gospel as well. What we see all of this boiled down to is that preachers are to focus on preaching the glories of Christ and the Gospel. It should also be pointed out that it is impossible to preach Christ and the Gospel without preaching, teaching, and exalting the glories and wonders of God in His free-grace.

It seems that in the United States today you have people focusing on discipleship or evangelism. Quite honestly, when either one of those is done as a focus Christ and the Gospel of Christ are not preached. The focus must be Christ and His Gospel of free-grace or people will not hear the truth of Christ or the Gospel. The Gospel of Christ is for the good of the people of God. The Gospel of Christ is the good news of Jesus the Christ. It appears that so many in the modern day think of the Gospel of grace alone as a canned message that they give to people in a very short spiel and then expect them to make a decision. This is why so many people have gone on to preaching meat as they term it and have left the so-called simple gospel behind. This is a huge mistake regarding both as to what the Gospel is and then for what the saints need.

The true people of God are a people with inward and outward trials and suffer the fiery darts of the evil one. They need to know the truths of Christ and His Gospel of grace alone that they may flee to Him in order to find protection and rest for their souls. Where else are believers to find rest for the assaults of the world, the devil, and their own sinful hearts? Is there anyone else who can protect believers from the world, the devil, and their own sinful hearts? We are to pray not to be led into temptation and protection from the evil one, but assuredly we can only find rest for our souls in Christ who is our King, our Shepherd, and our Advocate.

When the believing soul has his eyes opened to his own heart, where is that believing soul to go? When the poor and tried believer sees how worthy s/he is of eternal torment and the conscience brings torment to the soul, where is that poor believer to go? When the devil accuses the sensitive believer and tells them that there is no forgiveness for them, where are they to go? We find in the glorious Gospel of the free-grace of Christ that there has been a perfect sacrifice offered for each and every sin of the true believer who is a true child of the living God. The propitiatory work of Christ is for believers as well and in one sense especially so. It is true that the unbeliever must have Christ and be covered by His blood, but the believer needs this over and over day by day and hour by hour. The child of God finds comfort in the blood of Christ which has taken the wrath of God away, which means that there is now reconciliation with God. The believer needs to be cleansed on a constant basis in order to be in the presence of God and in order to pray. The Gospel of the free-grace of Christ must be preached on a constant basis for the good of those who already have Christ.

Preaching the Gospel is really preaching Christ since the Gospel is all about what Christ has accomplished to the glory of God. While some may not understand that the statement by Reynolds above is preaching the Gospel since he speaks of preaching Christ, one cannot preach the true Person and works of Christ without preaching the Gospel of Christ to some degree. Look at how Christ-centered the statement by Reynolds is. Christ is to be the substance of preaching, the goal of preaching, the desire of preaching, and His work is to be set out for His glory.

In this it seems that Reynolds is hitting at something about preaching that our day has missed. We are not just to preach the Scriptures, and that in an academic way, we are to preach Christ in order to preach the Scriptures. We are not just to preach these canned messages to get people up an aisle or to get a paycheck, but God sets men apart in order to preach Christ and His Gospel. There is no preaching of Christ unless Christ and His glory is the greatest end and purpose of the sermons. Jesus prayed (John 17) for the Father to glorify Him that He may glorify the Father. Preachers should preach Christ and seek the glory of Christ before God and the people. We are used to glorify God when we glorify Him through preaching Christ and His Gospel.

Reynolds says that preachers should preach Christ in such a way as to render Him amiable and precious in the eyes of His people. This is a vital point! It is a vital point in preaching to preach to God’s people in a way that exalts Christ and shows how He is greatly to be desired and how beautiful and glorious He is. This means that we are not just to preach the facts about Christ, but we are to labor and strive to set forth Christ in His beauty and glory. The labors of the preacher are not just to understand a text, but they are to seek the Lord for grace that the preacher may declare things about Christ that the people of God may be fed with strong food and sweet food.

One important thing, even an utterly essential thing to notice at this point, is that preachers must seek the Lord that He would show Himself beautiful and glorious to them. If this has not happened to the preacher, then he will not be able to preach this to the people. As one has said (Alexander MaClaren), it takes a crucified man to preach a crucified Savior. It also takes a man who has tasted of the Lord and sees that He is good to preach a Christ to others and describe what He tastes like and what it is to see that He is good. The Gospel is not just about the facts, but it is about the beauty and glory of God through Christ in those facts. There is a spiritual knowledge that preachers must be taught and the only One who can teach that knowledge is Christ and His Spirit.

We live in a day where orthodoxy is not valued by many, but among some it is valued to a high degree but valued in the academic way only. Anything more than the facts and what the intellect can grasp is thought to be mystical. However, the glory of God in Christ is far more than just words, it is the beauty and wonder of God shining in and through Christ so that the people of God will have their affections drawn to Christ. Part of being a human being is to have affections and as such we should preach with that awareness. The affections of the people will be exercised on something, so this should teach us to preach with the affections and desires of the people in mind. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy and so on, not just giving the facts of the matter. Biblical and spiritual preaching that benefits the whole soul of the people of God will strive to set out Christ in a way where He is seen and tasted so that He is better than the whole world to the intellect, the will, and the affections.
