Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them…22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts & receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 and just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

One of the most obvious ways (from the text) that God hardens hearts and turns men over to sin is when He hardens their hearts toward Himself and turns them over to various forms of humanism. The core aspect of sin is always in relation to God.
1. Men suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them.
2. Men exchange the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man
3. Men exchange the truth of God for a lie, and worship and serve the creature rather than the Creator
4. Men do not see fit to acknowledge God any longer
5. Men are haters of God
6. Men approve the sinful practices of others even though God hates them

What is so interesting to note, is that as men continue in their downward slide as they suppress the truth of God, men become more man-centered the greater distance they stray from the truth of God. But perhaps even more interesting (so to speak), is to note that man begins to think of God as a humanist and as man-centered. In other words, not only does man suppress the truth of God and become man-centered, but in his thinking he begins to think of God as man-centered as well. This is to say that as man suppresses the truth of God and of man as being in the image of God, man begins to make a god in his own image. It can also be said that as men suppress the truth of God they take His rightful place at the center of all things and become their own arbiter and standard.

The slide of men into sin takes a horrible toll on man and his submission to God. This slide into sin also takes a terrible toll on worship as men think that they are worshipping God but are really worshipping an image of themselves that they now call “God.” This wicked slide away from God lands man in a very, very distorted worldview and theology. Man thinks of God as being almost dependent on man and of God as also being very focused and centered upon man as if God loved man more than Himself. This is truly a frightening way of looking at things, yet this is the truth of the matter. Not all who use the word “God” mean even close to the same thing.

What we now see is a nation who has such a distorted view of God that it appears that the vast majority of churches that have the name of Christian are far from the true God. The so-called services are not about the wonders and glories of God, but instead about the greatness of man and the duties of man that he should do for God. What is missing is the true glory of God in that He saves by grace alone. The true God loves Himself and His glory and He must save men by grace alone and bring them to share in His love for Himself. God does not exist in heaven weeping and hoping that men will love Him, but instead it is His free gift of grace that He gives some men to love Him. God is sovereign over all men rather than men being sovereign over God in their choosing Him to be saved and in their praying to Him to get Him to do things for them. Even orthodox groups have suppressed the truth of God and so they think of God as being man-centered. Those who love the true God must be broken and pray. Those who love the true God should seek Him to open the eyes of blinded men so that His glory would shine in and through men as He deserves.

Christ Preparing our Hearts 26

July 12, 2015

Be persuaded that your soul is far more valuable to you than the whole world and there are only two places (heaven and hell) that you will spend all eternity in.

Debate the case with your soul solemnly. What is there in sin, that I so much dote on? What are my greatest designs and projects in the world? Can I dig the pearl of happiness out of this dunghill world? Can I get the houses, lands, honors, friends, that I aim at; and if I should, what are they? Certainly conclude, the greatest wisdom is to be wise unto salvation; and may best work is, to work it out with fear and trembling, lest I lose it.

In the last BLOG in this series (Christ Preparing our Hearts 25), a series of questions was given in order to help people examine their souls and to help others examine their souls as well. The point of the questions is not to make people discover their righteousness, but to discover their unrighteousness. When people discover their unrighteousness, they see their great and utter need for grace alone and for Christ alone. It also seems true that so many people are satisfied with their present religious practice and as such remain satisfied while dead in sins and trespasses. Eternity is perhaps the most real thing about our existence and yet we are blind and dead to it so much of the time. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation and the devil does a great job in deceiving people about whether they are saved or not and whether they really have Christ or not.

While the soul cannot be prepared in a way that makes it more likely for God to save it because of what it does, yet we must understand that in using the means of grace this is to be in the way or path that God saves sinners. We should pray as we meditate and think upon the Scriptures and our own souls. We must seek the illuminating work of the Spirit who alone can regenerate us and give us life. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in His work of regeneration as the Father was sovereign in His electing and the Lord Jesus was in purchasing salvation. The means of grace can be a very helpful thing if we use them correctly, which is to say that there is no merit in using them and we put no obligation on God to save us because we use them.

When we use the Scriptures, questions, meditation, and prayer we are to cry out to Christ to prepare us for salvation. But again, the true preparation for salvation is for Him to strip us of all hope in our selves and all help from ourselves. When Christ prepares the heart He takes the Scriptures we read, pray over, and meditate upon to show us our sin and just how unprepared we really are. Part of the work of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin, righteousness, and of the judgment to come. This all falls under the work of Christ in preparing a people to see themselves as totally and completely undone and as such to look to grace alone.

The world is a place where there are deceptive people, deceptive sin, a deceptive devil, and all working on the deceptive hearts of human beings. How deceptive the pleasures of sin are. How deceptive it is to our deceptive hearts for men to praise and honor us. How wicked it is for men to trust in themselves, yet how wicked that appears in their own eyes when Christ shows them that. While the physical world is presented to us today as a world that came into being on its own, or perhaps even created itself, the physical world is not morally evil itself. When the thinking about the physical world is in the hands of deceived human beings, it is used as a way to get people to look to the world as an answer for all our problems.

The real problem with the world is when the “world” is used as the Bible does at times. The “world” is used as a system of thought that is set against God and His glory. It is this world that men often times try to obtain pleasure and honors. It is that world that man must begin to see just how evil it is because it is set up against the living God as an alternative way of living and of morality. It is set up not just as an alternative, but as the only way. It is set up in direct opposition to the ways and being of God. As we begin to see the two contrasting systems, we must be enlightened to the opposing system and we must see that what we have as pleasure in the worldly system is wicked and sinful in the kingdom of God. Can the worldly system provide true pleasure to a spiritual soul who has Christ as his all in all? No, it cannot. Only worldly people caught in the deception of the worldly system can have pleasure that lasts as long as they lasts in this world. The work of Christ by His Spirit is to show us how deceptive the worldly system, how sinful it is against God, and then if He is pleased He can translate us from the dominion of darkness and into the kingdom of the Beloved Son. This takes the hand of God to prepare a soul and then transfer it.

Certainly conclude, the greatest wisdom is to be wise unto salvation; and may best work is, to work it out with fear and trembling, lest I lose it.

The quotes above, though discussed previously, are wonderful as a use for souls to examine themselves with. One can take those quotes and with prayerful meditation have quite a quality period of self-examination. The prayer should include prayers to Christ to prepare our hearts for Himself, whether regenerate or not. Look upon this period of meditation as a means for Christ to prepare your souls rather than just another religious exercise for you to accomplish or do.

1. What is it about sin that is so attractive to my soul?
2. What is it about sin that I long to practice it?
3. What is it about sin that it seems to be part of my very nature?
4. What is it about sin that it so attracts my thoughts?
5. What is it about sin that it so draws out my affections and desires?
6. What do I really want out of life?
7. Do I have many things to accomplish for self or do I truly desire His glory?
8. What is the greatest design I have as my greatest love?
9. What is the deepest love in my heart in terms of what I want in this life?
10. Can I really find happiness in a sinful world when sin brings misery and death?
11. If my soul is spending its time and affection on the world, then isn’t that idolatry?
12. Is Christ my true and deepest happiness in this world and is my hope set on Him for the next?
13. If there truly is no happiness in this world, why do I seek so much from the world?
14. Why is my heart so easily deceived regarding houses and lands in this world?
15. Do I truly desire those things more than Christ?
16. Why is my heart so easily deceived regarding honors and friends?
17. What is it about my heart that it longs to receive honor from men rather than God?
18. Why is it that at the very least it seems that I fear men more than God and long to be honored by them?
19. Why is it that when I pray I want men to think highly of me and perhaps even more than God?
20. Why is my heart so corrupt that I am so easily swayed to become like men but fight being like God?
21. Why is it that I can be so easily swept into a worldly conversation and yet it is so hard to be part of a spiritual one?
22. The greatest wisdom is indeed to be wise unto salvation, so why do I want men to think of me as wise?
23. Do I really want to be saved from the power and deceptiveness of sin?
24. Do I really want to please God rather than men?
25. Why is meditation on these things so hard rather than delightful?

Free Grace 6

Nothing in man doth precede or prevent the grace of God. The light and beams of grace do dispel the clouds of our sins. Not for our sakes, but for his Name’s sake he covereth our sins. It is God’s prerogative to free us from sin by grace, and to remove them far from us. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” {Ps.103:12} He only can remove sin against whom it is committed. He only can cast sin into the depths of the sea, who hath an ocean of grace in himself, in which he swalloweth them up. Micah is spiritually transported beyond himself in admiring this incommunicable prerogative of the God of Grace. “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage &c.;” {Micah 7:18;} and who can think that he will part with this privilege, which is his delight? For so it followeth in the same verse, “he retaineth not his anger forever, because he delighteth in mercy.” John Simpson {Perfection of Justification, 1648} Obtained from Supralapsarian.com

There is nothing that is such good news to sinners who are broken of heart and who see their sin than to see, know, and understand that God saves sinners by free-grace. The eyes that God have opened to see his or her own sinful hearts are hearts that now see how impossible it is for anything or anyone to save them according to merit. It is only if the omnipotent God is pleased to save them because of who He is rather than because of who they are and what they have done. Oh how an enlightened sinner sees that everything that s/he has done has been tainted with sin or simply full of sin. This soul begins to see itself as having a mountain of weight upon it because of its sin and it cannot see how God Himself can save it. Free-grace is the only comfort an enlightened sinner can ever have.

The enlightened soul sees itself as in horrible deformity by sin. In previous BLOGS on this subject we have seen how God considers man as less than nothing, but now we will see that sin makes a person an enemy of God and far worse than just being nothing. Man can moan in his sin and wish that he was nothing, but that can never be again. Man may even cry out to God to make him nothing and how he may wish he had never been born, but that can never be. The enlightened soul beings to see itself as nothing but a mass of deformity in its sin and it sees itself how it is an enemy of God and even begins to see its own enmity against God. A soul that has been shown a fair amount of light in this subject will know that it hates God and sees the wrath of God against it.

The enlightened soul sees its own vileness and pollution and knows that God sees that with even greater clarity. This soul knows that the Scripture commands it to be holy as He is holy and yet it now sees that it is as unholy as the devil is unholy. The soul knows that human beings were created in one sense as children of God, but now it is a child of the devil. The soul knows that unless it has its sin wiped away it will perish with the devil in the lake of fire. This soul knows that even if it could stop sinning, it could never make up for one of its numerous sins each hour of each day. Oh the weight of sin upon this soul.

The enlightened soul now begins to see itself as a sinner by nature. Not only does it sin, but it sins because it has a sinful nature. It begins to understand that all of its thoughts are sinful as they come from a sinful heart. It begins to see that its desires are sinful as they flow from a sinful heart. It begins to understand with sorrow that all of its motives, even if the outward act was thought to be good, were sinful and nothing but sinful. It begins to see that all of its actions flow from a sinful heart, but also all of the words that come from its mouth are flowing from that sinful heart. Oh the weight of sin because of the past, because of the present, and also each and every thing that soul will do in the future. This soul sees the utter impossibility for it to ever make up for one sin because even its righteous acts are as filthy rags.

Oh how this soul needs to see and understand the glory of free-grace. Nothing can prevent the free-grace of God if He decides to save a sinner. Regardless of how filthy the sinner is, God can show grace if He is pleased to do so. No matter the mountains of sin that stand against the sinner and no matter the sinners complete inability to do one thing to help self, God can show grace if He is pleased to do so. The glory of the Gospel of free-grace is that God saves for the sake of His own name and not for our merit or demerit. God is able to save sinners because He saves for the glory of His grace and for the glory of His own name. Oh how this must be set out to sinners and they should be encouraged to look to grace alone for faith and all aspects of salvation. God is jealous for His own glory and He will save sinners only for His own glory. This is the way of free-grace alone.

The first sentence in the paragraph above is an enormously important concept in grappling with and understanding grace. Man cannot earn the slightest merit in order to move God to obtain grace, but there is also nothing in man so powerful that God cannot save the person He sets His love upon. The glorious nature of grace sets the focus on God and not man’s abilities in any way. There is no obligation put upon God in any way outside of Himself to show grace. There is no necessity in man in any way for God to move God to save man. There is no merit in man at all, so there is no merit that would put an obligation on God to save man. What motive would God have to save man that can be found in man? This is to say that there is nothing in man or that man can do that would put the least obligation on God to save man. Grace is free of causation as found in man.
Salvation is free grace to man as there is nothing that man can be, do, or earn in any way the least part of his salvation or to move God to give any aspect of salvation. This grace that God saves with is freely given and nothing can be more freely given. But, in man’s way of thinking there are huge obstacles to the salvation of man. The biblical truth about man is that man is so weak and has no power at all in spiritual things. In fact, man is dead in spiritual things. In Isaiah 40:22 we are told that man is less than the grasshoppers. God did not save the angels when they sinned and they are greater than man. God does not save the grasshoppers either. There is nothing in man that can move God to save him, yet salvation comes to man and most gloriously to the glory of God.

Isaiah 40:14 With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge And informed Him of the way of understanding? 15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust. 16 Even Lebanon is not enough to burn, Nor its beasts enough for a burnt offering. 17 All the nations are as nothing before Him, They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless.

The Scriptures teach that God did not consult with anyone and no one has given Him understanding or taught Him anything. No one can even inform God of anything. Though an aside, this should be instructive about prayer. The nations, taken collectively, are said to be like a drop from a bucket. The nations, again collectively considered, are regarded as a speck of dust on a pair of scales. The nations taken together are as nothing in His presence and in His regard or estimation are as less than nothing and meaningless. When all the nations as a whole are regarded as less than nothing or meaningless, then what is a single individual? What could move God to save nations when they are less than nothing or meaningless? But even more, what can move God to save an individual out of those nations?

Clearly, and without any question, there is nothing in man that can possibly precede the grace of God and so the grace of God is given without any cause found in man. When men look to themselves as trying to find a reason in themselves for God to save them, how this must be a wicked and horrible thing in the sight and nostrils of God. Arminianism must be looked at in this light as well. The Arminian looks to his or her free-will to come up with faith, belief, or a choice in order that God would respond to him or her. This is an affront to God and His free-grace. That is simply human beings trying to find something in themselves to move God to save them. It is a denial of the depravity of man and the free-grace of God.

For so it followeth in the same verse, “he retaineth not his anger forever, because he delighteth in mercy.” John Simpson {Perfection of Justification, 1648} Obtained from Supralapsarian.com

It seems as if the pride and self-sufficiency of man have swallowed up the biblical teaching of the free grace of God in the modern day. We have so many scholars, so many excuses, so many qualifications, and so many conditions that they have seemingly swallowed up the free grace of God. It was not always so. There were men, who though dead in body still live through their writings, believed and wrote about the free grace of God and fiercely opposed the adding of any qualifications to it at all. The Gospel of grace alone still shines through their writings, but in the pulpits of this land the doctrines of free grace are extremely rare in our day.
“Nothing in man doth precede or prevent the grace of God.” What a glorious statement that sets out the beauty and grace of God. There is nothing in man that comes before the grace of God. There is nothing in man that prevents the grace of God. These are twin truths that set out the one grand truth of the freeness of God’s grace. No work, merit, or anything that man is or can do will ever move God to show grace to man. There is no sin or sins in man that can prevent the grace of God if He chooses to save sinners. Oh how this should encourage men to seek the grace of God! The omnipotent God can save any sinner He is pleased to save. His grace is connected to His power and as such it is an omnipotent grace. Nothing in man can prevent the grace of God in saving sinners.
“Not for our sakes, but for his Name’s sake he covereth our sins.” Again, what beauty and what comfort these words have for our souls as the glory of grace shines forth. It is grace toward sinners that God saves sinners for the glory of His own name. It is grace toward sinners that for the sake of the love of God for Himself that He saves sinners. It is for the sake of the glory and beauty of His own righteousness, holiness, wrath, and all other attributes that God saves sinners. The Gospel is the location of the fullest display of the character and attributes of God if we have eyes to see. The Gospel is all about His glory and it is as we behold the glory of Christ that we are changed from one degree to another in that glory.
“It is God’s prerogative to free us from sin by grace, and to remove them far from us.” Can weak and sinful man free himself from his own sin? Can man remove sin from himself and remove them far away? It is impossible for man to do what God alone can do. It is impossible for man’s will to do what only God’s will has the ability to do. Sin has power and the devil has power over his subjects, so we must see that no man can remove himself from sin or remove sin from himself. Sin is part of the very nature of man, so clearly it takes grace to change the nature of man by regenerating him by what is in God rather than what is within man.
When we see these things put together, we see the absolute impossibility for God to show grace unless it is a free grace. The three points about grace in this little BLOG shows the freedom that true grace has. Nothing in man can precede or prevent true grace, so grace is free. It is for the sake of His own name that He saves sinners by grace alone, so grace is without cause and as such free to men. It is God’s prerogative to free those whom He will free from their sin, so grace is without cause apart from within the triune God. The freeness of grace is set out and demonstrated by these three points. We should behold the beauty of God and bow in humility and thankfulness.

The Lord has told us to come and reason together (with Him). In the case above the unknown author wants men to reason with themselves. If we think through the situation, it is a wise question to ask ourselves as to what is there in a particular sin or sins that we are so taken with it. When we spend time meditating and debating with our own souls, this is one way that Christ may instruct the soul if we seek Him to do so. As we meditate we should pray for God to open our eyes to the true nature of sin rather than being deceived by it. Sin is deceptive, our hearts are deceptive, and the devil is the deceiver.

We should tell our souls that we shall die soon and enter eternity. In eternity there are only two places where we will end up and that will be our eternal dwelling place. In light of those eternal truths, what is in sin that I am willing to risk eternal damnation on? What is so good and pleasurable about sin in this life that I am willing to suffer for it for all eternity? What is so attractive about sin that it blinds me to the eternal torments that it will lead to? Does a particular sin really and truly offer me enough to suffer for it in eternity? If the whole world is not worth going to hell over, then why should I harden my heart in the pursuit of sin? If not, then I must tell myself that no sin is worth selling my soul for.

What are my greatest designs and projects in this world that I am willing to set aside the things of eternity for? Is any job or any salary worth going to hell over? Are my designs and projects worth the time and love I give them in neglecting my eternal soul? Are the things I am living for in this life worth neglecting eternity for? What do I hope to earn or obtain in this life that I am placing an equal value or even a greater value on than eternity? Do I love this world so much and my hope of gain in this life that I am virtually ignoring the great value of eternity? We must remember the words of Christ where He constantly placed eternal things over that of having the entire world. If I am placing greater value in my designs and projects in this world than that of eternity, even if I deny that in words, I am a great fool and am selling my soul at a cheap price.

Only those with the great peal of price will enter into the joy of their Master. But those with the great pearl of price will have sold all they had in order to obtain that pearl. But of course that is figurative language when it is said that they sell all they have, because there is nothing we have that can buy the smallest part of the pearl of great price. What it does speak of, however, is the nature of true repentance. It is in being turned from the things we have pride in and the things of self that we are said to have sold all. It is another way of saying that there is a narrow gate to go through and there is no room to get through that gate with love for the world and self. There is no room to get through that gate with pride.

It is also impossible to go through that gate and to sell all if I am in pursuit of lands, houses, friends, and honors. Even if I obtain those things, what have I gained? If I have not Christ, then I am selling my eternal soul in order to obtain earthly things that will burn. Perhaps I am seeking the wisdom of the world, but if so what will that wisdom do but blind me to eternal wisdom? What will all the honors of the world do but puff me up with pride and make me love the opinions of men? These are things that are contrary to the lowly heart, the humble heart, and the broken heart that are necessary to bow at the feet of King Jesus. We must listen to the words of King Jesus and ask Him to put them in our hearts as we meditate on Him and His words. If not, we are turning our backs on the things that can make us wise unto salvation and will pursue the things that make us fools unto damnation.

If the text of Romans 1:18-32 is correct, and as the Word of God it is, then the United States of America is in deep, deep trouble in a spiritual sense and in the sense of remaining a nation. If we think of the nation reflecting the theological and spiritual condition of the “Church” in our day, then this makes a great statement about the “Church” in our nation. The “Church” is to be salt and light in our society, but instead it has been the exact opposite. The “Church” has been in decline for at least two centuries and this has been seen with some clarity since the middle of the 1800’s and with even more clarity starting with the 20th century.

In the days of John Owen (died 1683) he lamented Arminianism and thought of the teaching of free-will as an idol. He also lamented the fact that he was seeing the preaching of the Gospel as being with far less power in his day than in previous days. Not only did Owen write strongly against Arminianism, but others wrote against it as well. In the days of Jonathan Edwards (died 1758) the unconverted members of his congregation were quite frightened when they heard that Arminianism was gaining power in New England. They were frightened because they thought of Arminianism as a judgment of God and so they thought of their day of salvation as over.

It has been stated that there is no logical stopping point between Calvinism and atheism. Others have stated that there is only a small difference between Pelagianism and Arminianism. If the Gospel is indeed a Gospel of grace alone and Christ alone, then Arminianism cannot preach the true Gospel. The Arminian position, of necessity, believes in the free-will and a free-will is free of depravity enough to make a decision, but also has to be free of grace in order to be free. This leaves us, though they will argue with words to the contrary, with a gospel that is not grace alone and Christ alone in reality. By virtue of sheer definition it is a gospel of grace alone in name alone rather than one that is truly by grace alone.

Charles G. Finney was licensed to preach in 1823 and in 1825 he had a “successful” period of preaching in Utica, New York. Both his message and his methods were different than Jonathan Edwards and Asahel Nettleton. Not only did he not believe in the total depravity of man, he also denied original sin (men are born sinners). Men were not thought to have to wait on God for a new heart, but they could decide “right now” to be saved. Finney had great results for a while and many pastors followed his methods. America has not been the same since. Finney is now thought to have been a giant in the land and he was been the great champion looked to for modern evangelists. Interestingly enough, Finney was a heretic and his methods were based on his heresy. His theology and his methods opened the “Church” to unbelievers and in fact many church buildings were filled with unbelievers by his theology and methods, both in his day and in the days since.

When we look at things from a theological angle, we see how we have arrived at our present state in America. Theology has been abandoned for visible results. Methodology has been changed for visible results. However, the visible results are far different from a biblical point of view. Many have been deceived and the local churches have been taken over by unbelief and humanism. Secularism has crept in and humanism has swept away large numbers of “churches.” Arminianism and Pelagianism (at times virtually without distinction) have taken over in name and in practice. The Reformed groups offer barely a peep at the erosion of the Gospel and our nation as a result of Arminian and Pelagian thinking. After all, it is hard to be in the same denomination if one is speaking out about how false a theology is. After all, it is not thought to be gracious or winsome if one speaks against another theology. However, if Owen and Edwards (and others) were right, it just could be that descent of the “churches” and our nation is to be set at the feet of Arminianism and Pelagianism. It is something we must ponder.

The very essence of sin is seen in v. 19 in that human beings suppress the truth of God that is within them. They suppress this truth of God in order that they may do what they want, and in this mad pursuit they become fools. God turns them over to in the lusts of their hearts to even more sin and their bodies are dishonored among them, yet we are told that they did his because they exchanged the truth of God for a lie and in this worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator. Here is the very essence and heart of sin. It is man who in the worship and love of self fails to worship and love God, but not only that but also suppresses the truth of God and out of self-love in reality hates God.

People who hate the true God will profess to love God, but what they do is love the god that they have come up with in their own imaginations. The love an idea of a god and they love that god because they think that god loves them, but if one pierces through the reality of it all and sees through the darkness there is nothing but hatred for the true God. Those people suppress the truth of God when they come up with their idea of a false god. These people bow in worship of self and the false god they think loves them and they love that god, but the reality is that they are doing nothing but suppressing the truth of the true God. The very act of coming up with a god of their own imaginations is an act of suppressing the truth of God and as such is idolatry.

The text is quite clear that when men exchange the truth of God for a lie, and that is after they were given over to lusts of the heart; God gives them over to degrading passions. This is set out for us in the text of Scripture by saying that women changed the natural function for that which is unnatural and men abandoned the natural function of the women and burned with desire for one another, which had them committing indecent acts. When we see the text setting out things like this, it is quite obvious that Paul meant. It is not that homosexual acts will be punished in the future, though indeed they will, but it is punishment itself. When people commit those types of acts that is demonstrative evidence that God has turned them over to a depraved mind. That depraved mind leads to many other sins as well.

The brutal fact of the matter is that is that Americans think that these acts are now okay but the Bible says those acts are themselves a judgment of God upon them. The Scripture tells us that these things are worthy of death, but there are many in our day who are involved in these acts and not only involved but applaud and give hearty approval to those who commit them. This is a sign of a nation that is rapidly descending into lower and lower levels of judgment. This is a sign of a nation that has rejected (virtually as a whole nation) the true God and now stands against Him and His truth in the approval of what God calls indecent acts. This nation is so wicked that it seemed to burst out in applause in the media and parades across the land in celebration of decision by a so-called Supreme Court that violated the will of the real Supreme God. This nation is gasping for air and is in death throes in our day. However, what boggles the mind is that perhaps for centuries (since the early 1800’s) theology has been rapidly descending as well. In fact, I would argue that as theology has descended the secular thinking and godlessness has ascended in terms of power over the minds of the people. We are a “Church” that needs to be granted repentance and to seek the face of the Lord. It is only a repentant “Church” seeking the face of the Lord that can possible be used of God to bring the true Gospel to a dying nation.

Free Grace 3

Romans 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

The glory of free-grace is that it puts the glory of the grace of God and therefore the beauty of God Himself on display. The glory of the Gospel is that it does not require man to come up with faith or anything else as such, but what it does is require man to look to Christ for faith and all things apart from any worth or work in self. The Lord Jesus Christ did not look across humanity from eternity past and choose to die for those who would choose Him. The Lord did not pick out those who had more worth than others and choose to die for those. Instead of that, grace teaches us that the Lord Jesus died for sinners who had no worth and no merit at all. Instead of having merit, they had an infinite amount of demerit that needed to be paid.

The teaching of Scripture on redemption is that Christ paid a ransom price for sinners, but it was not because they had the slightest bit in them to deserve the slightest price to be paid. There is nothing at all in sinners that would move Christ to make the redemption price even slightly less because there was something of value found in them, but instead the whole of redeeming grace was moved by God within the Trinity. For grace to be really grace it must be a grace apart from anything in the sinner that would make one sinner more or less likely to be died for. No, no, and no a million times! Grace points to the Redeemer which points to the sovereign and electing grace of God as self-loved rather than any other reason. Grace points to the all-sufficiency of God for all causation and for all merit and for any and all things necessary to save sinners.

Christ came as a Redeemer and as such pay a ransom price for sinners. While we normally think of things we pay a price for as having a value, this is not the case with sinners. There was a price that had to be paid if the sinners were to be released, but it was not a value they had of themselves. It was of a debt that they had incurred as a result of sin and more sin. This debt was enormous and the sinners themselves were entirely helpless to pay it, so if the payment was to be paid it had to be paid by Christ. There was no other. There was nothing in them or about them to move the Father to send the Son to pay the debt, and there was nothing in them or about them to move the Son to come and pay the debt. What moved God as triune to pay the debt was His own glory and the love that God has within Himself as triune. The Redeemer could come if moved by love for the Father and His glory. It was love for the Father indeed that moved the Redeemer to take the sins of sinners upon Himself and pay that debt.

What is seen in Redemption, then, is a free and uncaused grace to sinners because God was moved by Himself to save sinners as there was nothing in them or about them that would move Him. God saves sinners to the praise of the glory of His grace. In Christ the Father shone forth and manifested His glory and as He beheld Himself in Christ He was delighted and pleased. His perfect justice was satisfied with the ransom price and the Son loved the Father perfectly in perfect obedience and holiness in what He did. In this great love within the Trinity and the love for holiness of and for the Trinity we can see the glory of God and grace that moved them to save sinners apart from anything found in the sinner.

The glory of free-grace shines and is magnified in saving sinners because of who God is rather than anything found in sinners. This also gives the Gospel a far greater basis for saving sinners and a far greater comfort for sinners when they die to all hope in self and find hope in Christ alone. Since God saved and saves sinners apart from any motive, reason, or cause found within them, it only follows that all the true hope that they will have is found in Christ alone. It was Christ who fully paid the ransom price and did so out of love for the Father. It was Christ alone who perfectly glorified the Father in the place of sinners. It was Christ who paid the price and was resurrected to be the only hope. The Gospel of free-grace is full of hope in God, but the false gospel of free-will is full of hopelessness in the sinner trusting in self. A free and causeless grace is the Gospel of the glory of God.
